For many home and business owners, the first step toward installing a new exterior is the most intimidating–hiring a contractor. Few people have much experience with hiring construction professionals, and it can be difficult to know what you should be looking for. Recognizing this difficulty, the team here at El Paso Siding brainstormed a list of questions to get you started.
Here are the questions the El Paso Siding team suggests asking your interviewees:
- How many years have you been in the siding business?
- Do you have a current and valid contractor’s license?
- What all does your quote include?
- Is siding your main area of business? If not, what is?
- Are you familiar with the major exterior materials, including cedar, fiber cement, vinyl, and natural wood?
- When can you start work on this project?
- How long do you expect this project to take?
Once you have asked your interviewee all of these questions and decided that you are satisfied with the answers, it is time to move to the next step: drawing up a contract. You will want to make sure that this contract covers all of the points that you discussed, including an itemized list of all goods and services to be supplied for the price agreed upon.
SIDING MATERIAL COST COMPARISON
New siding is available to all, whether the sky’s the limit or you are working with a shoestring budget. If your price range will allow for a higher initial investment, it’s a good idea to spend a little more in the beginning. Siding is a long-lasting purchase, and will last even longer if you are able to afford high quality materials.
Included below is a list of financial factors that you will want to take into consideration:
- Does the material you have chosen require any additional costs, such as painting or staining?
- Is the product guaranteed by the manufacturer?
- Are local weather patterns going to wear down the material you have chosen? How long will it be until it requires replacement?
- To what degree will the resale value of your home or business increase?
SIDING INSTALLATION COST
Supply and demand for different siding materials and contractor’s services will fluctuate pricing from region to region. The most influential factor in terms of pricing is the experience and reputation of the contractor. Following that, the caliber of materials being used and complexity of the building in question are also key. Overall, siding installation tends to cost between $6 and $12 per square foot. Vinyl, the easiest material to install, is also the least expensive, which boosts its popularity. Fiber cement falls mid range for both the difficulty of installation and related costs. Cedar is the most difficult of the major materials to install, and it’s labor costs put it at the high end of the list.
It is often quite tempting to install siding oneself, saving on the cost of labor. While it may save some money upfront, it is unlikely to benefit you in the long run. Siding is a very particular item and requires significant training and skill to install it properly. Self-installed siding is liable to fail within a few years, and some insurance policies will render home insurance void on homes with self-installed siding.
